Prison Island Tour

Tour Description
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is one of Zanzibar's most popular attractions, combining fascinating history, unique wildlife, and beautiful natural surroundings. Located just 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, this small island is easily accessible by a short boat ride.
Despite its ominous name, Prison Island was never actually used as a prison. The island was purchased in 1893 by Lloyd Mathews, the first minister of Zanzibar, who built a prison complex on the island. However, the building was ultimately repurposed as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases and other infectious diseases.
Today, the main attraction of Prison Island is the colony of giant Aldabra tortoises. These magnificent creatures were originally a gift from the British governor of Seychelles in 1919. Some of these tortoises are over 150 years old, weighing up to 200 kg. Visitors can interact with these gentle giants, feed them, and even touch their shells under the supervision of trained guides.
The historical prison building has been preserved and converted into a museum where you can learn about the island's fascinating past. The building's architecture is an interesting blend of colonial and Arabic influences, reflecting Zanzibar's diverse cultural heritage.
Beyond its historical and wildlife attractions, Prison Island boasts pristine white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The coral reefs surrounding the island are home to a variety of colorful fish and marine life, making it an excellent spot for underwater exploration.
Our Prison Island tour offers a perfect blend of history, wildlife, and beach relaxation, all within a half-day excursion from Stone Town. It's an ideal activity for families, couples, and solo travelers alike, providing a diverse and enriching experience of Zanzibar's unique offerings.
